Introduction
This poem talks about the moon and how beautiful everything looks in its light. The moonlight turns everything silver, from fruits and trees to a dog’s paws. The world looks beautiful and silver in the moonlight. The poem is 14 lines long. Every two lines rhyme.
Poem
Slowly, silently, now the moon Walks the night in her silver shoon; This way, and that, she peers, and sees Silver fruit upon silver trees; One by one the casements catch Her beams beneath the silvery thatch; Couched in his kennel, like a log, With paws of silver sleeps the dog; From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep Of doves in a silver-feathered sleep; A harvest mouse goes scampering by, With silver claws and a silver eye; And moveless fish in the water gleam, By silver reeds in a silver stream.
Slowly- silvery thatch;
The poet says that the moon slowly and silently walks the night in her silver shoes. The moon is personified as a woman who walks with silver shoes in the night. She looks this way and that, and sees silver fruit hanging from silver trees. Everything looks silver in the moonlight, including fruits and trees. One by one the windows catch the moon’s beams under their silvery thatched roofs. Every object catches the bright moonlight and shines silver.
Couched- silver stream.
The dog who is sleeping in his kennel like a log has paws of silver. His paws look silver because of the moonlight too. The white breasts of doves in silver-feathered sleep peep from their dark nest. The moon’s beams make the feathers of the sleeping doves look silver. A harvest mouse quickly runs by with silver claws and silver eye. Motionless fish in the water glow by silver reeds in a silver stream. Therefore, the moon makes everything look silver in its light, including animals and nature.
Conclusion
The poet makes us aware of the beauty of a moonlit night through this poem. He personifies the moon as a woman who turns everything silver in her light. The beautiful scene leaves a lasting impact on us and shows us how the moon lends its own beauty and glow to all objects.
