Good morning one and all. Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends, it is my pleasure and privilege to stand before you today. I am honored to have this opportunity to speak to such a distinguished audience.Today on this occasion, I would like to talk about the growing dependency on technology and how it drastically impacts our lives.
Today there has been a digital and technological revolution and the globe has changed significantly. However, with newer technologies there has been an increasing dependence on it. From smartphones to the internet and the many other devices that come along, we use technology in virtually all aspects of our lives.
It even extends to entertainment and communication.Regardless of its outward benefits, like everything else, technology comes with its own set of risks. We must be aware of its risks and the downsides of being extremely dependent on it.
To begin with, a dependency on technology can prove to be quite detrimental to not just our physical health but also our mental health. For instance, spending an excess amount of time on screens can cause a strain on the eyes, cause headaches and also lead to sleep deprivation and disorders.
It threatens an active lifestyle and leads to a more sedentary style. Tasks that earlier required effort and activity are now completed by just a few taps and clicks. This lack of activity is a growing concern and often found to be the leading cause of a variety of health problems including obesity.
Technology has facilitated communication from the comfort of one’s home, people can also order groceries and shop from their houses. All this has led to an increase in social anxiety and isolation. There is a decline in this generation’s ability to communicate and socialise effectively. People have lost empathy and often fail to connect with others in physical spaces and develop meaningful connections.
Next case in point, this unhealthy dependency can harm our ability to be creative and our problem solving skills. Everything is available on the internet and just a click away, thus we lose the ability to think on our own and critically solve problems independently. We expect technology to do the work for us, relying heavily on the copy and paste system. By posting or sharing too much online, we risk our privacy and safety. People often fall victims to cybercrimes.
Technology if used systematically and ethically can prove to be a boon. However, too much reliance on it can be detrimental and thus we must all be mindful of our use and ensure that we use it responsibly. Thank you.
