What is a Sentence
In this article, we will discuss the basics of Sentence in English. We all know that a sentence is a group of two or more words. Look at the following sentence
Superman I am a.
Is it correct? Did you find any mistake in it? Now, look at the following sentence in which we have reorganized the words.
I am a superman.
It seems to be meaningful. Right? Thus a sentence is “A group of two or more words that make complete sense”. Below are some examples to make you understand the Sentence.

So now you have understood which combination of words is a sentence and which is not. You can ask, “are there any rules to make a sense of a group of words?” Well, yes! There are five rules that should be followed while making a sentence. In the next section, we will try to understand those rules. Ok?

Sentence Structure in English
A sentence is made up of two parts- Subject and Predicate. The subject is the person, place or a thing about which something is said. And what is said about the Subject is Predicate. Got it? Read the following examples to get the idea.
We hope you understood Subject and Predicate. Now let us move further. A sentence has five basic structures. Without these structures, no sentence can be made.
1.) Subject+Verb
Examples
Shahrukh Khan weeps (uaaa uaaa)
He dances.
I eat.
They play.
She walks.
We run.
In these sentences, the blue words are subjects and the green words are the verbs.
2.) Subject+Verb+Noun
Examples
Tiger Zinda Hai is a movie.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a singer.
You are a boy.
They are students.
She is the president.
In these sentences, the blue words are subjects, the green words are verbs and the black words are the nouns.
3.) Subject+Verb+Object
Examples
He eats bananas.
I play Bluewhale game.
She walks on walls.
We killed mosquitos.
The teacher punished them.
In these sentences, the blue words are subjects, the green words are verbs and the black words are the objects.
4.) Subject+Verb+Adjective
Examples
She is ugly.
He is naughty.
The prime minister is a liar.
Hrithik Roshan is handsome.
I am smart.
In these sentences, the blue words are subjects, the green words are verbs and the black words are the adverbs.
5.) Subject+Verb+Adverb
You sing badly.
She is walking fast.
We ran quickly.
They eat slow.

Sentence Types in English
There are five types of sentence.
- Assertive Sentences
- Imperative Sentences
- Interrogative Sentences
- Exclamatory Sentences
- Optative Sentences
1.) Simple/Assertive/Declarative Sentence
In simple words, declaration or assertation is a statement or observation. A simple sentence is that in which some declaration or assertation is made or an opinion is expressed. A sentence ends with the following punctuation marks.
Full stop (.)
Sign of Interrogation or Question Mark (?)
Sign of Exclamation (!)
2.) Imperative Sentence
An Imperative Sentence is that in which command, order, advice, request or emergency plea is made. An imperative sentence can end either with full stop or sign of exclamation.
3.) Interrogative Sentence
It is the sentence in which question is asked. Thus all the questions are interrogative sentences. An interrogative sentence is always followed by Question Mark (?).
4.) Exclamatory Sentence
An exclamatory sentence is the one in which sudden expressions of surprise, grief, joy, and fear are made. An exclamatory sentence always ends with the sign of exclamation.
5.) Optative Sentences
Optative Sentences are those in which wishes are made. It ends with the sign of exclamation.
